Bone Densitometry

If you answer yes to any of the following questions you may be at risk for osteoporosis:

  • Do you have a family history of osteoporosis?
  • Do you have a personal history of adult fractures?
  • Have you had a loss of 2 or more inches in height?
  • Have you gone through menopause?
  • Are you currently taking thyroid medications, prednisone, corticosteroids or other steroids?
  • Have you been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis?

Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by low bone mass and structural deterioration of bone tissue, leading to bone fragility and an increased susceptibility to fractures of the hip, spine and wrist. It is often called the "silent disease" because bone loss occurs without symptoms. Bone Densitometry (DXA) is a simple, safe and painless diagnostic test to identify those women at risk for osteoporosis. Through a Bone Density Scan, which measures your bone mass, osteoporosis can be detected early and treated. Mid-Atlantic Imaging Centers perform full bed (hip and spine) Bone Density Scans at all five imaging centers located in Chesapeake, Newport News, Norfolk and Virginia Beach offices. Referrals are accepted. Hours are by appointment only. Most insurance plans are accepted.
